In Finland, Catholic religious education is given by schools and by parishes. The children to be educated should first be registered in a parish. There are eight parishes in Finland. If you do not know which one you should turn to, we are happy to help you.
According to the law, Catholic religious education in schools has to be organised in each municipality where the parents of at least three public school students demand it. You can enquire about the situation in your home municipality at the school. We have here a list of municipalities where we know for sure that there is Catholic religious education. If you want to set up a new group or start as a teacher, or if you need support in discussions with the school, we are happy to help you.
Religious education in the parishes comes in two forms: it may substitute the religious education in school, or it may be given as direct preparation for the reception of the Sacraments. We have a list here with cities and towns where the parishes offer catechesis. In some places, catechesis is offered in several languages, and we try to keep ourselves updated on that. Normally, the parishes would only take to Sacramental preparation those children and youth who are also taking part in religious education.
